Torup-Sondrup Church Path (Kirkesti)

There is no church in the village Sondrup. So, back in the old days, the inhabitants had to walk to the church in Hundslund on a social trail. The old paths through lovely nature still exist. Today, they are connected as a waymarked roundtrip in the area in direct connection to the popular Horsens Fjord path.

Historic hike around Sondrup

This waymarked hiking route is a 3,8-kilometre-long roundtrip in the area between the villages Sondrup and Torup. You will be walking on forest paths, dirt road, desire paths and tarmacked roads. The area between Torup and Sondrup Plantation is relatively hilly, and the route is not suitable for walking impaired. The route is sign-posted with yellow arrows and dots.

The churchgoers from Sondrup certainly had a long walk to the church, but at least it was beautiful. Two sections of the church paths are still well-kept and make up the majority of the route.

The hike starts here

It is possible to start from several locations, but an obvious choice is gym Hundslund Hallen (Torupvej 39) located in Torup. There is plenty of parking space and the route heads right past the gym. From here, you can follow the gravel road to the south through changing landscape with forest, common, and vast expanse. At one point you will get to Sondrupvej which you will follow until you reach Sondrup. Turn left on Svinballevej, where you will find another forested church path through wooded terrain. In this section the path is quite narrow. You will pass a little forest lake before making your way back to Torup.

Connected to the Fjordmino

In Sondrup, you can opt to follow the yellow signs to the south to Sondrup Plantation. Here, the Torup-Sondrup Church Path meets the Fjordmino (Horsens Fjord Path). So, the church path can serve as an extra loop on the route around Horsens Fjord. Including the stretch between Sondrup and the Horsens Fjord Path, the route is 4,6 kilometres long. Another option is to combine the church path with a hike in Sondrup Hills which is one of the most beautiful nature areas of Eastern Jutland.
