Michelin Star for Ribe Cathedral
The historic Ribe Cathedral is now classified among Denmark’s top attractions in the Michelin Guide. Current restoration will see the cathedral square transformed into an open public space in the heart of Scandinavia’s oldest town.
The world-famous Guide Michelin has added an extra star to Ribe Cathedral, putting it on par with Denmark’s other three-starred attractions that include Rosenborg Castle in Copenhagen and Kronborg Castle, which enjoys UNESCO World Heritage patronage. The Michelin Guide’s new classification of Ribe Cathedral means it is recommended as “worth travelling for”. Located by the Wadden Sea National Park the town of Ribe also offers a wide range of other unique attractions. All Danish attractions in the Michelin Guide Restoration completed in 2012 Ribe is Scandinavia’s oldest town, dating back 1,300 years. One of Denmark’s best-preserved historic towns, Ribe has changed little since medieval times. The cathedral, which was completed in 1250, has recently undergone exterior restoration, and in October 2011 work started on the transformation of the cathedral square into a car-free zone. The project by Danish landscape designers Schønherr KS seeks to restore the square as a public gathering space with market place activities, cafés and restaurants. Designed with different shades of Nordic granite in tune with the cathedral’s unique granite masonry, the remodelled square will be inaugurated in 2012. Viking rune stone discovered During excavation of the cathedral square in 2011, a 1000-year-old rune stone was found, which is currently exhibited at the museum Ribes Vikinger.
